Practicing - I went for the "Party at Your Place" achievement first, which entails playing 300 unique songs, so I was pretty well practiced up at the game by the time I started trying to get gold stars. Not necessary or anything, but either way you're going to have to put in some hours before you get the knack of switching tracks between notes without screwing up Blitz mode, because you'll need Blitz mode as much as possible to get gold stars.Control Method - I used the A button for the right notes and the control pad for the left notes. I started out by trying the control sticks because I thought it would make strumming more natural, but it just didn't translate for me (my left stick also ghosts a bit too, so that didn't help).
Power Ups - I used the same power ups for almost every song: Jackpot, Blast Notes, and Super Guitar. For some of the "harder" songs where that wasn't enough (usually because they had a keys part that kept my multipler down), I'd switch from Jackpot to Road Rage and use it to level up the tracks on the left hand side of the screen while I worked on vocals and keys. Jackpot is great on any song with long sustains, if your tracks are leveled up enough you can usually just ride out the sustains at the expense of everything else and get all the points you need. As for the blast notes, hit them whenever possible, as long as you can still keep your streak alive.
Priorities - In this order:
- Level up your multipliers. Every track.
- Play energy notes so you can deploy power ups.
- Play whichever track you enabled the point bonus on.
Still, some songs are going to take a lot more practice and technique than others, so I made some videos of the songs that gave me the most trouble. If you want to see any others just let me know in the comments below and I'll post a video. Until then, here you go:
